Early Irish sources tie the festival to Lug, who is said to have founded it as a funeral assembly for his foster-mother Tailtiu. The associated games at Teltown continued in some form into the medieval period.
Practically it marks the first cutting of the grain, and the first loaf from it, which is where the English Lammas, loaf-mass, comes from.
Hilltop and holy-well gatherings across Ireland at the start of August, such as Reek Sunday, sit on the same seam.
